08 Oct 07 - Log on to cut and colour as local salon opens world's first online hair school.

The world's first online hair school has been set up by local salon proprietor, Fran Smith. Fran who's originally from Dublin owns busy hair salon 'Trevor Francis', which is located in Longford Town Shopping Centre. Fran who also owns another successful salon in Park Way Shopping Centre in Limerick, has over 25 years experience in hairdressing, colouring and barbering. Fran told the Leader what inspired him to set up the on-line hair school "I found it very difficult to find adequate educational hair classes for my staff and sometimes when they returned from training they were still feeling unconfident with their new skills. I thought to myself what if hairdressers had an online site where they could watch tutorials from qualified hair trainers on a regular basis, until they were happy with the level they had learned," he commented.
The successful Online Hair School grew from Fran's idea and after nearly a year and a half of filming and preparation, the site was born back in April of this year. In the last eight weeks the site has had over 200,000 hits and they have sold their on-line tutorials and DVDs to destinations all over the world. The on-line tutorials were filmed in Trevor Francis in Longford as well as salons and studios in Dublin and Limerick. They work in a similar fashion as watching a video clip on You Tube, basically you log onto the site, which is www.onlinehairschool.com, then you pay a fee for your chosen tutorial with a credit card and within minutes you can watch the class as many times as you like. The only stipulation is that you must have broadband internet connection on your computer to watch the live feeds. The site caters for those without broadband with dvds that can be posted out to their customers within ten days.Fran himself hosts a lot of the tutorials, which show hair stylists talking you through everything from cutting, colouring, up-styles, gents cuts and styling techniques. The camera is zoomed in tightly so that it feels like an intimate one to one class. Some of Fran's local staff from Trevor Francis also got to appear before the camera as hair models.
The site is being up dated all the time, so hairdressers or those with an ambition to be a hair stylist will always have a variety of new tutorials to view. Fran commented that all the feed-back has been positive so far and that "some hairdressers with learning difficulties have contacted me saying they were delighted with the tutorials as they could watch, listen and learn, without the stress of using books," he remarked.

Having spent so many years studying different gents cutting techniques and proud to say that I have taught some world class barbers, I am delighted to announce that today we are launching our new Gents online video tutorials. They consist of 3 different Gent's Hair Cuts. The first is a basic layered cut with some scissors over comb and clipper work ; the second tutorial is a clipper cut using a number 2 blade and blending with scissors over comb and the third tutorial is a traditional hair cut where we demonstrate 5 very different techniques that give us the one result. Online Hair School Launches !
01 Jan 07 - We are pleased to announce the launch of the Online Hair School. The first site of its kind in Ireland (or indeed the world!), Online Hair School is the brainchild of renowned Dublin hairdresser Fran Smith and was developed by BS2. The site allows users to learn modern hairdressing skills online from watching Fran himself cutting hair.
A series of streaming videos show Fran cutting hair in various styles while talking the viewer through the process in a very informative manner. This is an affordable way for the budding hairdresser to perfect his or her skills by learning the techniques from an expert in the comfort of their own living room.
The video tutorials are available in a series of high quality streams which can be viewed 3 times a day for 30 days for an average price of EUR 20.00.
